What could cause so many babies to be born jaundiced?

I've had more than a few acquaintances recently have children,which is wonderful. But I have noticed that many of their babies are born with jaundice. Why does this happen so much and if I ever have a child is there anything I can do to lower the probability that I will have a jaundiced baby? Just curious, thanks.
